here's an interesting genre-defying mix that i got recorded while stuck in la waiting for my chinese visa to get approved. it took an extra week because of 'the swine flu' - although i'm not really sure why... they didn't ask me to se a doctor or deal with any sort of additional screening.

being broke and carless in los angeles f*cking sucks...but managed to meet a few nice people (where were they when i LIVED there??) . thanks to jen for giving me some motivation to make another post.

i've always felt like you can't push too hard on things or they start to come apart. its sort of a supermarket mentality - ask mom for too many things at the store and you come out empty-handed. try to get the one of the flavor you want from the back and knock over the display. truth be told - it all comes back to the same deciding factor. whomsoever can apply the most of it, wins (more often than not).

this mix starts off on a moody vibe - working its way through some nathan fake, losoul, and style of eye. i like starting things off like this - it really gives the mix a sense of development - but tend to avoid it when i'm playing out (bu hen kai xing)in any case, when troydon's playtime drops in things get cookin.

when i'm not sure how i want to deal with something, i think . it bugs the hell out of some people (especially the hasty emotionally-driven types), but i'd rather say what i mean and know how i feel when i say it than blurt things out as tyhey pop into my head. god forbid if i ever started doing that. anyways - only problem with my approach? sometimes i don't figure it out so fast. results in waiting. sometimes, when you wait too long, it's hard for someone to take anything you have to say as sincere.

yeah, i posted this before... but i don't think many of you checked it out. i don't like a whole lot of my own stuff but this is a favorite of mine and i'm proud of it. give it a listen (from beginning to end, ideally).

labels suck. you are either this, or that, or somewhere in between. never seems to be accurate enough to you, but accurate enough for everybody out there to accept it and not really give it more thought.

i recorded this somewhere around the new year... so late 2007 or early 2008. that first track is an old grauzone cut called 'clocks'. for germans, those guys are pretty damned funny.

i'm gonna be late for work again.

been a while - but with a recent move to chengdu i haven't been playing as much (until recently). here's one i did back in february - a more aggressive mix on a funky tech tip (with an admittedly 90s sound to a fair amount of it). the mix includes cuts from the likes of dave clarke, kevin saunderson, adam beyer, and even myself ('macro belief' - kicks off somewhere around 3 1/2mins into the mix). i've always been a big supporter of the techno scene, although growing up in san francisco didn't really give me much of an opportunity to play it (i did anyways - with mixed results). much respect to the void crew for pushing proper techno in forward shanghai with quality events and promotion. definitely gave me a bit of motivation to dust off some of my old favorites (and look for new ones).

so, i'm bringing this one back a bit. its a more straightup dirtfloor underground house set to balance out the cacophony i posted earlier this week. as always - you've gotta look elsewhere for the commercial cuts because i dont play them... but money back +20% if this doesn't get your head nodding a bit.

jeez, that's some amateur hour BS isn't it.

some of my friends give me shit about the amount of mixes i record and distribute. to be honest, there are a whole lot of mixes that i record and *don't *t distribute, but i do put mixes together pretty regularly. that's because i record a lot. i don't program my mixes beforehand - with the exception of stuff i do with live! - and it gives the results a much more dynamic range. i alo give mixes out with warts and all (well, more than one or two and i generally stop recording but...). i give out mixes - warts and all - because making stuff is what's important.

sometimes you make the decision and sometimes the decision makes you.

didn't write a tracklist for this one - but there's some mike monday at the beginning, the wiiiiicked kinky movement remix of olivier desmet's 'hot on your tail' just before 'elevator jamz' from joshua heath... then into some stff from the brique rouge / urbatorque guys. also tracks from different gear, francois dubois, audiofly, troydon, somore and damon trueitt... anyways, a surprising amount of european for me to play... but i really don't care where the tunes are from so long as they handle business.

i put this together for shanghai's PAUSE event back in april. it was the first set i played using ableton live! - as evidenced by the somewhat rough quality of some of the mixing (i was still figuring out how to address the latency of my midi controller). in spite of this, it is still one of my favorite recordings - and relatively popular amongst the few people to whom i've given a copy. i aimed for a diverse the track selection it ranges from ambient to downtempo, to house, breaks, tech, and... the aphex twin.
